What motivates people to write books about astrological psychology? Joyce Hopewell devised a questionnaire to find out. Here are the answers from John Grove, author of the books Dreams and Astrological Psychology and Life Passages.
1) What inspired you to write this book?
As I was finishing my course for my APA diploma in 2015 I noticed a correlation between Age Point Transits in my radix to sensitive points and dreams at those times. I found that the dreams I had collected (in dream journals going back to 1970) at those conjunctions, oppositions and were spot on with Huber’s’ Life Clock psychological tasks outlined in Life Clock. So, my interpretations of these dreams were significantly enriched by this discovery.
2) What did you enjoy about writing it?
It was rewarding to identify issues related to the Huber Life Clock in the lives of 6 volunteers from whom I had collected birth data, dreams and did an Age Point analysis of the psychological issues they were facing and the dreams at those times. I checked with them whether the interpretations based on Huber’s AP psychological tasks were right for the time of the aspect and the dream. They confirmed these did correspond. These dreams and analyses are highlighted in Chapter 4 of Life Passages.
3) What – if anything – surprised you in the writing process?
I found it surprising to find out so many types of dreams; precognitive, teleological healing dreams, dreams of the shadow, anima and animus; dreams of communication with the deceased; and traumatic dreams had positive correlations with Age Point Progressive life tasks. Now I integrate dream interpretation, the life clock issues of Age Point Progression into my psychotherapy cases; I find these issues have a lot to do with why clients seek me out.
4) What was challenging?
The challenging work is supporting the motivation of people to do dream work on their own. I give the tools, they must provide the heavy lifting for the endeavor to be worth it for them. I am enthusiastic about the magic people can discover in their own psyches by their dream interpretation, age point progression and aligning themselves with the Divine will (Pluto work).
5) What did you enjoy most?
It has been most gratifying to discover the connection between dream work and psychological tasks as identified by Huber’s in Life Clock. To share this with people can enrich their lives and give them a feeling that an invisible hand is at work behind the scene (the SELF).
6) What did you learn about yourself in writing this book?
It taught me of my wish to bring to others, in a spirit of service, these gifts they own outright.
7) What new insights did you gain about astrological psychology?
I learned how deeply manifest is the Spirit in Astrological Psychology which can lead to transmutation and growth in the personality and character of its followers.
8) What impact would you like this book to have?
I challenge psychologists and astrologers to use their own dreams more in the process of self-discovery and transformation. The tool we identified in Life Passages is important for 9th house work; finding meaning in life in times that are so much a wasteland of conflict and chaos.
9) What are you working on now?
a. I have written a foreword in the book The Return of Planet Sedna Astrology and Awakening of Cosmic Kundalini by Jennifer Gehl. To be published in March 2019. I contributed also to Chapter 3 in her book related to Sedna’s Radix, House Chart and AP Progression.
b. I have completed in December 2018 a Foundation in Psychosynthesis course by Will Parfitt which took a year to complete.
c. I am currently publishing blogs related to the above issues through asklepiosconnection.com on issues related to astrological psychology, dreams and current events. I contribute to Conjunction when asked which gives me an audience of peers and associates and is gratifying to read others contributions too.
I love the way John is synthesising his knowledge to help others discover their inner talents. You should read his books if you haven’t done so already.
Great to hear some of your underlying thoughts and touch points to all your books and new adventures, John. You motivated me to pursue some dream studies (after my APA diploma is complete, of course!). I’ll echo Sue’s comments on your books, too! Jen says hi!
