US psychotherapist John Grove spent 40 years in a conventional professional environment of empirical psychotherapy. At the same time, he pursued an interest in Jungian approaches to individuation, including the use of dreamwork in helping to uncover aspects of the Shadow personality, integrating these where possible into his practice. His interest also extended to the use of astrological techniques, notably in the form known as astrological psychology.

As he came to retire from full-time work, John was able to fully explore together two major fields of personal psychological development: the use of astrological psychology and the birth chart, together with the recording and evaluation of dreams in uncovering aspects of the unconscious/ the Shadow. The result was documented in two revolutionary books published by HopeWell, as follows.

Dreams

In his first book Dreams and Astrological Psychology, published in 2014, John reflected on how the dichotomy between his professional and personal interests reflected the fundamental split in Western thought that is leading to today’s global crises. The subjective demands as much attention as the rational-objective dominant mindset. Individuation is as important as behavioural therapies. The unconscious parts of ourselves and their projections demand to be understood before we can become fully developed human beings.

With many examples, John shows how dreamwork and astrological psychology provide valuable twin tools to enable this process of personal integration. He proposed to make us all our own psychologists for it is possible for anyone inclined to reflection to try to understand the puzzle of their own psychic existence.

Life Passages

In his second book Life Passages, published in 2017, John expanded on the theory and practice of using the horoscope together with dreamwork as tools for psycho-spiritual insights. The theories of Bruno and Louise Huber’s seventy two phases of psychological development are compared to Erik Erikson’s Eight Stages of Man to demonstrate the validity of the Huber Life Clock.

John provides volunteer’s dreams which synchronize with Age Point Progression in contact with sensitive points in the horoscope. He asserts that environmental life events can trigger dreams which can impact dreamer’s attitudes creating profound identity changes supporting growth. He provides techniques and examples for dream incubation, recall and journaling of daily events that go with the amplification of dreams.

The two books

John Grove’s two books provide a valuable means of helping the uncovering of unconscious aspects of our personality that may begin to come to light through astrological analysis and intuition.
